competition The Living Spine: A Prototype for Resilient Learning in Nepal.

Nepal

In response to Nepal’s monsoon-induced devastation and seismic fragility, this project proposes The Living Spine, a modular and replicable school prototype rooted in resilience, lightness, and community. More than a building, it is a system for regeneration—socially, spatially, and environmentally.

The design is anchored by a central spine—a light-filled atrium that acts as both thermal chimney and social heart. Around this core, classrooms and community spaces unfold in modules that can grow over time. The spatial porosity of the layout encourages natural ventilation and ensures that daylight reaches even the deepest areas, reducing reliance on artificial systems.

The building is raised on a platform, minimizing flood risk and protecting against wildlife intrusion. Cross-ventilation is achieved through operable louvers and vertical air shafts that guide airflow from shaded courtyards upward, following the principles of passive cooling. The sloped roof, made with local galvanized sheets, facilitates rainwater harvesting and supports photovoltaic panels for energy self-sufficiency.

The material strategy balances robustness and locality. The base is constructed with stone and rammed earth—materials resilient to moisture and seismic movement—while upper structures utilize bamboo and timber, promoting ease of assembly and local labor engagement. Each detail is designed to be easily maintained and reconstructed by the community itself.

Education is not confined to interiors: gardens, outdoor classrooms, and a large porch allow for cultural rituals, play, and seasonal gatherings, making the school a true epicenter of village life. The open layout fosters inclusivity and offers refuge during emergencies, aligning with the dual function of learning and safety.

The Living Spine is not an architectural statement—it is a pragmatic, hopeful response to systemic vulnerability. It recognizes the urgency of climate adaptation and celebrates the capacity of communities to rebuild with dignity and intelligence.
